Behind The Music
After helping put together a playlist for the 2021 Internationalist Queer Pride in Berlin, I felt like something was missing: an uplifting anthem encapsulating the motto of the demonstration “No one of us are free, until all of us are free”.
When I found a recording of Dr. Maya Angelou speaking about exactly this topic, I knew it would be the perfect match for the house groove I had been working on. Everything came together just in time to play it on the soundsystem as the 2022 pride march departed Hermannplatz.
People asked what the track was and where they could get a copy, but I didn’t feel ready to share it, wondering how best to redirect resources and focus to the work and legacy of Dr. Angelou.
When a new podcast, The Solidarity Index, wanted to use the tune as their theme song, it was time to find a way to put it out into the world — I set up my own imprint Common Groove, and started preparing the release, with the goal of using it to raise funds for the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation.
Until Everybody Is Free will be live on Bandcamp and all streaming platforms on Monday 9 January 2023. All proceeds from this release go to the Dr. Maya Angelou Foundation.
